Rescuing Dry Skin!!! Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream

Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream formulated with extra-strength emollients and humectants that bind water to the skin preventing moisture loss.
Does it?
Read on.

This moisturiser came in as a total surprise to me because it is something that I would never ever have bought for myself as it is aimed to chronic dry skin whereas my skin is moderately oily. However, a year ago, my skin (mostly on the face and legs) became irritated and flaked the flipping out of me due to the extreme cold weather I had during my winter vacation, so I went to Guardian and picked this up.

Applied daily to dry skin as needed and it being described by Cetaphil as...
"A superior system of extra-strength emollients and humectants that binds to the skin preventing moisture loss, Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream gives long-lasting hydration on your skin, keeping it soft and moist"

Packaging
The 100g Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream comes in a classic and simple squeezy tube, so it's really easy to use, sanitary and very transportable. The expiry date can be found on the top back of the tube. Cetaphil also sells this cream in a big jar but take note that some of the ingredients such as vitamin E wouldn't remain stable for so long if you consistently exposed it to light and air. Therefore, I suggest you to buy the cream in tube form.

Ingredient Analysis
As always, the first thing I do when considering buying a product is- LOOK AT THE INGREDIENT LIST. I always have fun reading it because from there you could have guessed how the product is going look like and what would it do. Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream is one of those who packed with emollients, humectants and occlusives ingredients. I think I've explained these terms before but just in case you've forgotten;

emollients: ingredients that act as lubricants on the skin surface (stratum corneum) and gives the skin a soft and smooth feeling.
Eg: mineral oil, dioctyl ether, sweet almond oil, tocopheryl acetate

humectants: ingredients that attract water when applied to the skin and will improve hydration of the stratum corneum (mostly trans-epidermal water/from dermis). In high humidity, this ingredient capable of attracting water from the atmosphere.
Eg: propylene glycol, glycerin

occlusives: ingredients that slow down the water evaporation from the skin by forming a barrier on the skin's surface
Eg: polyglycerol methacrylate, mineral oil, dimethicone, dimethiconol

Interesting findings and further readings:
1) Polyglycerol methacrylate (powder form in room temperature) able to give a mattifying finishing to the cream.
2) Sweet almond oil consists largely of oleic acid, a fatty acid that has been shown to improve the skin barrier and also providing moisturised effect. Read more on the phytochemical of the oil [here].
3) And, to those who is scared of using mineral oil as a moisturiser, read these articles by thebeautybrains.com [part 1] and [part 2], as well as this journal about mineral oil published by International Journal of Cosmetic Science;
[Rawlings, A. V., and K. J. Lombard. "A review on the extensive skin benefits of mineral oil." International journal of cosmetic science 34.6 (2012): 511-518.]

In my opinion, this Cetaphil cream has excellent, albeit basic moisturising agents. It doesn't have fragrances too, which is nice!! and also, the cream is marketed as free from lanolin (wool wax from sheep), a good conditioning agent but often causing sensitization to the skin.

Verdict
Did I like it?
Sure kids, A LOT.
I can say that it cured my dry patches for less than a week. CURED. Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream was not only nice but well-rich too and it made my skin felt so smooth and moisturised. I was originally buying this as a body moisturiser but because it was sooooo good, I decided to use it on my face.
And, I didn't have any problem using it as a face moisturiser. Never broke me out and it seemed to have done the trick. I'd strongly suggest this cream if you have severely dry skin! You could actually feel the comforting sensation it gives and feels like it's working to moisturise the skin. If you're oily, this one might be a little uncomfortable because I know there are some people who may not like putting mineral oil and silicones onto their face (but think again, even most makeup primers would have silicones in them), and also mineral oil is indeed a good moisturising ingredient.

The cream feels slightly greasy at the very beginning but as soon as your skin started drinking it up, you wouldn't be noticing any shine, in fact, the finishing is almost matte and it's not surprising since polymethylmethacrylate, a mattifying agent is one of the main ingredients. However, if you put too much, then you'd still be greasy lah. Lol. Texture-wise, it's kind of heavy or like 'coating' your skin, but it's very hydrating at the same time. I'm currently using the Cetaphil cream on the nights where I need extra moisture or when my cheeks get flaky particularly during the time of the month.

Downfall- except for the price (it can be quite pricey to some but hey! you're getting a big tube), I can't think of anything bad about the cream. I can't stress how good this moisturiser is, it does exactly what I would want my moisturiser to do. A+++, well-done Cetaphil!

Bottomline
Simple yet effective. Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream is a good option for dry skin types looking for a basic protective moisture. Personal rating-10/10. Once I manage to get through this tube (if ever), I'd gladly repurchase it.
