PART II | J.One Jelly Pack - A Sisley Double Tenseur Moisturizing Gel Dupe?

J.One is a Korean beauty brand that is very new to me although I've been seeing a lot of Western beauty gurus on Youtube have been talking about the famous Jelly Pack a.k.a "glue" primer many months ago. Although it was launched in 2015, it was brought back into the spotlight by NikkieTutorials because she had it on her June's favourite. Kathleen Lights, Tati Westbrook, Christen Dominique and Liah Yoo also talked about it in their videos. I also know for the fact that people have been comparing this product to Sisley Paris Double Tenseur Moisturizing Gel because of its texture and face lifting effect.

Thanks to a recent affiliate programme I signed up to, I was given the opportunity to review 3 of the J.One best selling products. I was not paid for this and all opinions are 100% on my own and unbiased as per always. In this blog post, I'll be covering topics on the J.One Jelly Pack as well as the 2-steps Jelly Pack Vita Mask. J.ONE JELLY PACK
Dramatic firming skin with improved elasticity and pore-smoothing

Official Description
A multitasking, anti-ageing formula that works as a hydrating morning mask and makeup-gripping primer. It's a solution for firmness and elasticity, dullness and uneven texture and also dryness.

Claims
-Rich nutrition gives lasting corset effect, creating firm skin.
-When you gently pat it on the skin, it will adhere to skin and create a silky smooth skin.
-It takes care of the skin which becomes rough due to the harmful external environment by enhancing the protection function of the skin.

How To Use
Dispense a dime size amount onto fingertips and gently sweep onto a cleansed skin (approximately 1-2 pumps). After 30 seconds, pat into the skin for a complete skincare routine & mask experience in one product. This is a perfect 1-step routine for the morning, but it can also be layered with as a night cream before going to sleep. Packaging
J.One Jelly Pack comes in an opaque white plastic bottle, which I have to admit I'm not really drawn to it. I wish the design is nicer like J.One Hana Cream where it has this transparent, glass looking packaging at the bottom part of the jar and that would totally look a lot more exclusive. You get 50ml of product in the bottle (which is a lot) and it dispenses easily through a pump system. I'm liking it the best because unlike jar packaging, we are able to minimize the gel to air exposure, hence helps to protect all the beneficial ingredients. To me, a pump system feels better than a tube because sometimes, any liquidy product tends to ooze out quickly when we squeeze especially if we are dealing with a lighter consistency.

Ingredients
Water, Polysorbate 80, PEG-150 Disterate, Niacinamide, 1,2-Hexanediol, Rosa Damascena Flower Water, Rosemary Leaf Water, Chamomile Flower Water, Yeast/Fermented black tea extract, Imperata Cylindrica Root Extract, Nuphar Luteum Flower Extract, Sea Daffodil Flower Extract, Glycerine, Adenosine, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Dipropylene Glycol, Sucrose Distearate, Cyclopentasiloxane, Butylene Glycol, Dimethicone, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, PEG-8, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Potassium Sorbate Palmitoyl Triipeptide-5, PVP, Fullerene, Carmober, Disodium EDTA, Penoxyethanol, Sodium Benzoate, Citric Acid, Dehydroacetic Acid.

Again, just like the previous Hana Cream I've reviewed, this product has a lot of plant extractions with most of them you have already familiar with. Niacinamide, a vitamin B derivative, ranks up so early on the list which helps in some ways in skin brightening. The gel also contains a lot of silicone polymers and interestingly, PVP! I really do love PVP in primers and setting sprays, this ingredient is what prolonged the makeup application!

Verdicts
1. Thoughts on the hype
As a huge makeup junkie, I'm always impressed when a brand manages to come out with something that is so innovative and different than what already offered in the market. I've not seen anything like this before in the K-Beauty world; a morning mask + primer hybrid. The closest resemblance I can think of is Maybelline Babyskin Pore Eraser Primer, although they are totally 2 different things. Meanwhile, a lot of people have been comparing J.One Jelly Pack to the ever-famous-das-expensive primer from Sisley Paris. Both have the same gooey texture and is meant to provide longevity in makeup.

Anyway, I was shooked af when I got this Jelly Pack sample inside the box because I know a lot of famous beauty gurus on Youtube have spoken about it. Tati Westbrook hates this while NikkieTutorial swears by it, same goes to Kathleen Lights, who told her viewers the correct ways to apply it. Does this primer works for me? we shall see, read my next point ;P.

2. Texture, consistency, finishing and scent
Like I mentioned previously, the primer has a gooey texture resembling an Elmer glue and it's super weird that I'm not even kidding. When I first test it on my hand, I was like "OMG WHAT IS THIS STICKY THING?" "ARE YOU SURE THIS IS A PRIMER?" because of J.One Jelly Pack is really, unlike your traditional makeup primers. It's colourless, thick and has a gel-like appearence. The gel dries up slower than other primers as it would normally takes around 5-10 minutes before it completely absorbs into the skin resulting in a "chok-chok" or bouncy base. No scent detected!

3. Layering products (as a makeup primer)
I've been experimenting with it for weeks, whereby each day I try to change up my makeup routine by trying it out with different tools, sunscreens and foundations. I figured the best way to use this is to pat the product into skin, not rubbing it in a circular motion. Next, I'd recommend patting in the foundation or BB cream using a brush instead of buffering technique. I also do not recommend a damp sponge because the primer will move around and ball up if you press it too hard.

If you're doing makeup, Jelly Pack works at its best when it gets a direct contact with the skin instead of layering tons of products underneath. This gel is going to "grip" the skin and kind of gives the feeling of "lifting", so at this point, I have to agree with whatever they said on top of the packaging. Didn't I tell you in my previous post that J.One range is targeting to women who are seeking for anti-ageing skincare regime? And because of its gooey texture, it's also going to "grip" whatever you put on top of this primer. Thinks of something like the Nivea After Shave Balm.

Does this make my foundation applications become easier tho?
Yes and no.
Yes for dewier foundations and BB cushions, a big no for mattifying foundations, but I'm guessing that could have just been my technique. Throughout the try and error process, I figured that you really need to wait until the Jelly Pack slightly absorb into the skin, so give it a waiting time. BE PATIENT OR YOUR MAKEUP WILL BECOME A DISASTER.

4) Layering tips:
(a) sunscreen ▶ Jelly Pack ▶ foundation
No (I've tested it with several sunscreens and most of them were making my foundation cakey because the Jelly Pack balls up very easily on top of anything)

(b) Jelly Pack ▶ sunscreen ▶ hydrating primer (optional) ▶ foundation =
Yes (even Ha Ji Won is layering them this way)

(c) What if I'm using both Hana Cream and Jelly Pack?
My recommendation:
Jelly Pack ▶ sunscreen ◀▶ Hana Cream

(d) In which order should I include J.One Jelly Mask if I'm doing the K-beauty inspired skincare routine?
cleanser ▶ toner  serum ▶ essence moisturiser ▶ Jelly Mask (as a sealer)

Conclusion
Interesting product but it's so hard to use under certain foundation! It's not what I expected in terms of feel after application. As a primer, I'd rate J.One Jelly Pack 2/5 stars. Sorry NikkieTutorial, gotta disagree with you this time ;P. This product is honestly workable but you really need to know the correct technique of applying it, hence, not suitable for makeup beginner.

For instantly, dramatically lifting effect as per claim tho, I'd rate it as 5/5 because I swear to God, it does give me the lifting/bouncy/corset feeling to the skin making it such a weird yet fun product to try! I would say if you have dry skin, you'll be needing something double as a moisturiser to make the application seamless.

Verdict
Firstly, it's an interesting sheet mask that has 2 components, hence it's a good thing to have if you're on the go or out somewhere for vacation. No need to bring the Jelly Pack bottle right?

I put this on while writing this review. The fit is good- covers most part of my face, adherence is amazing, essence doesn't drip off, still have a little bit more inside the package (27ml worth of essence). It's also comfortable, no burning sensation but the fragrance... while it smells nice, it also makes me sneeze. I do not notice any brightness after using it but my skin definitely feels firm, tightened and moisturised.
